Lumina Intunecata is the third episode of fifth season of Syfy's Van Helsing and the fifty-fifth episode of the series overall.[1]

Synopsis[]

Jack faces off against the Dark One with a new ally whose allegiances may not be trusted.[1]

Plot[]

The Dark One rises with Olivia as her vessel. Michaela introduces her to the Sisterhood and reveals that it was through her studies that brought the Dark One back. However, Michaela wishes for the Dark One to serve at her side. As a demonstration of power, the Dark One unleashes a wave of energy, taking down the Sisterhood and warning Michaela that she serves no one, before sending a dark wave of energy coursing through her body. Writhing in pain, Michaela submits to Dracula. Dracula suddenly senses a threat, and Michaela warns her that vampire hunters are near.

Upon Jack, Bathory, and Roberto's arrival at the castle, Jack begins to feel a searing pain in her forearm. She realizes that Michaela is using her connection to Jack to track them via the mark of bewitchment, an act that causes Jack immense pain. In order to prevent Michaela from finding them, Bathory carves out her mark with a knife.

Dracula tasks Michaela with hunting down Jack. Should she fail, Dracula will bring Jack as her subordinate. With dawn approaching however, they will have to remain inside until the sun goes down. However, Dracula exclaims that the light will bend to her whim the same as everyone else and proceeds to bring about darkness upon the lands with a wave of dark cluds.

Jack informs Bathory that her mother's scroll can turn the odds in their favor, but Bathory is reluctant to fight darkness with darkness, as her mother was an example of just how dangerous such combat can be. Jack wants to head back into the village to gather Florian's people, but Roberto reminds her that they still think she's a witch.

With day having been made night, the Sisterhood attack the village. Florian and Alexandra flee into the woods, though they don't make it far. Alexandra attempts to reason with one of her Sisters who has tracked them down but fails. Fortunately, Jack arrives and shoots her with an arrow.

Count Dalibor flees the castle with his son and tasks Captain Rasto with seeing to his safe passage. However, Dracula blocks their path. She gives them an opportunity to submit and give into the darkness, but the men charge towards her. She disposes of two of the men before feeding on Captain Rasto. Dracula then inches towards Dalibor, who pleads with her to spare the child. Dracula agrees to allow baby Christoff to live should Dalibor follow her every instruction.

With so few options left, Bathory is forced to use her mother's scroll. Legend had it that the first vampire was exiled long ago by an enchantment, forced to roam the earth without physical form. Bathory's ancestors searched for many years, but they could not find it, let alone capture it. So instead, they devoted themselves to hunting down the evil that lived amongst them in the shadows, i.e. the Sisterhood. And then Bathory's mother found the scroll, authored by the very person who summoned and then banished the Dark One in the first place. The incantations serve as an antidote to the powers of the Dark One, a means to make her vulnerable. But to do so, the person who uses them must also access the darkness that makes Dracula so powerful. Bathory makes Jack vow to kill her should she become seduced by the darkness, as her mother made her. Count Dalibor then arrives at the camp in search of Jack and explains that he has to save his son.

Count Dalibor returns to the castle with Jack and places her in the dungeon. As for Bathory's hunters, they were all cut down, Dalibor claims. Dalibor explains that he will do whatever it takes to save his child. Michaela then instructs Dalibor to take her to her prize. And so, Dalibor leads her into the dungeon, where Jack sits in a cage. By the time Michaela realizes that she's been tricked with an illusion, she is being attacked by Dalibor's men before Dailbor himself delivers the killing blow.

The illusion to fool Michaela was created by Bathory's use of the scroll. Dalibor then rings the bell from the castle to signal Michaela's death.

Dalibor finds Olivia crying on the floor, claiming that the Dark One left her body. Dalibor reveals to Olivia that he killed Michaela, cut off her head, and threw her down into the moat. Olivia then embraces Dalibor, who in turn stabs her in the chest before recovering his baby boy, exclaiming that his wife is dead. However, Dracula rises to her feet and bites Dalibor, turning him into a vampire.

Florian leads Jack, Bathory, Roberto, and Alexandra through a small secret tunnel into the castle. Once inside, they are ambushed by the King's men, who have all been turned into vampires, led by Captain Rasto, who Jack kills in battle. Bathory kisses Roberto goodbye as she and Jack proceed ahead to the tower.

Dracula holds baby Christoff in her arms and contemplates feeding on the child. However, she ultimately can't bring herself to do it for some inexplicable reason. She then proceeds to breastfeed the child.

Jack and Bathory make their way to the tower, where they are attacked by Count Dalibor, who has been turned into a vampire. Armed with an axe, he attacks the two vampire huntresses. However, Jack manages to bite him and restore his humanity. Unfortunately, Bathory is injured during the attack. Count Dalibor apologizes for attacking them and not believing Jack before about the vampires. She then notices that Dalibor isn't healing, which is unusual for someone who has been turned back.

Jack and Bathory make it to the tower, where Dracula awaits. She seeks for Jack to join her at her side, but Jack simply instructs Bathory to begin reading the scroll. Jack then charges towards Dracula, who attempts to hold Jack at bay, but between the two hunters, Dracula starts to feel overwhelmed. Looking to regain control, Dracula claws Bathory's face, blinding her and stopping the incantation.

With Bathory out of commission, Jack must face Dracula on her own. Dracula claims that the darkness is more powerful than the light and that it is all consuming. Bathory then proceeds to recite the spell from memory, bringing great pain to the Dark One. Jack then bites Dracula and takes in a bit of her darkness. However, Dracula has managed to resurrect Michaela, who stabs Bathory from behind with a sword.

Having been wounded in battle, Count Dalibor gives Alexandra and Florian his son, Christoff, and tells them to flee the village at once. Roberto follows along behind them but not before asking about Bathory and Jack. Dalibor says that their fates are in their own hands.

Dracula must kill Jack in order to gain the power that was stolen. With part of Dracula inside her, Jack flees the castle with the scroll while Bathory holds off Dracula and Michaela with the darkness inside her from having used the scroll.

Count Dalibor collapses in an alleyway, where he prays for his son with his final breath before the castle ablaze.

Dracula bites Bathory and commands her to rise and accept her transformation. Bathory, a newly turned vampire, remarks that in blindness, she sees everything and that she is the Oracle.

Jack flees the castle and convens with Roberto. With his help, Jack purges the Dark One's into the amulet. The pair then flee into the woods as the castle goes up in flames.

The following morning, Florian, Alexandra, and Roberto take Jack to the docks, where she intends to set voyage for America, leaving with them baby Christoff, who Alexandra intends to raise as her own. Jack then hands the Van Helsing book and amulet back to Roberto. He questions if the book and amulet should remain with her, but Jack states that the amulet and the book have made it from the Romas to the Van Helsings once before. She has faith that they will again. Under Roberto's sketching of Jack in the book, she wrote a note for all those that follow. Florian then hugs Jack goodbye and thanks her for everything she’s done for them. Alexandra realizes that with them having to put the bay into hiding, he will need a new name. Roberto suggests Jack Van Helsing.

Present day, at the White House, Bathory approaches Dracula, both of whom realize that the past has altered and that some of Dracula's strength is missing. Bathory then notices a bite mark on Dracula neck from when she was bitten by Jack.
